SHKP Literary Magazine

Hong Kong life

The SHKP Book Club is an initiative by Sun Hung Kai Properties to promote reading. The Book Club started publishing its free literary magazine early this year, and it has since become a hit with Hong Kong readers. This issue looks at urban living in Hong Kong, on the mainland and in Taiwan. The magazine features books about the changing cityscapes to help readers better understand the cities in which they live.

The main article by cultural observer Leung Man-to recommends six books that offer new perspectives on topics as diverse as the Sham Shui Po redevelopment, Hong Kong markets and public housing estates, heritage sites and architecture, high-density development in Hong Kong and urbanization.

Taiwanese observer Zhan Hong-zhi describes how he fell in love with reading at young age, and other well-known book critics and scholars like Chiu Wing-kai and Martin Oei discuss the latest popular comics and literature.

There is also a piece on how reading can bring inner peace, by the former Head of Corporate Communications at Sun Hung Kai Properties May Lau, who recently retired. She recommends some titles on understanding death and spirituality to help people stay happy despite the fast pace of life.

The magazine is available for free at over 80 bookstores, in 19 SHKP malls, schools and public libraries.

Other initiatives by the Book Club include book review competitions and a contest to help young writers get published, plus book fairs and seminars with writers to promote reading in Hong Kong.
